What a copycat token is

A copycat coin reuses another coin's name, ticker or image so that buyers mistake it for the original. This is also called vamping. Names, tickers and images can be copied by anyone. The one thing that cannot be copied is the coin's mint address, the onchain address that identifies it.

Send.Do does not currently detect or block copycat coins. Check the mint address yourself before you trade.

How to check a coin

  1. Get the mint address from an official source. Use the project's own website or its long-standing social account, not a reply, a direct message or a search result.
  2. Compare every character. Copycats can create addresses that start and end like the original. Compare the whole address, or paste both into a text search, rather than glancing at the first and last few characters.
  3. Match it on Send.Do. A Send.Do community or coin page carries the mint address in its link, for example send.do/community/<mint address>. Where available, Send.Do also links to the coin's page on OTC, so you can check the same address there.
  4. Do not rely on the name or ticker. Tickers are not unique. Send.Do itself lists more than one community whose coin uses the ticker $OTC, and they are different coins with different mint addresses.
  5. Check the history. On a block explorer, look at when the coin was created and how many holders it has. A coin that appeared shortly after a popular one, with a matching name and few holders, deserves extra care.

What these checks cannot tell you

  • Finding the real mint address tells you which coin is the original. It does not tell you whether that coin is a good or safe purchase.
  • Two coins with the same name are not always a scam. Unrelated projects sometimes choose the same name or ticker.
  • Images, badges and descriptions on any site, including Send.Do, are not a substitute for checking the mint address.
